17 Philanthropy In Action Real Estate Education Featured Program: Real Estate Scholars Program Meet Our 2015-16 Scholars! In 2015, HEEF launched a new initiative that provided three exceptional real estate students with the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with real estate innovators for a once in a lifetime experience aimed to jumpstart their careers in real estate. Each Scholar was paired with a "super mentor" and given access to individuals and opportunities that enriched their education and understanding of the field. The Scholar experience included mentorship days, career counseling sessions, meetings with industry "icons", behind the scenes "field trips", invitations to industry symposiums and conferences, and so much more. It culminated with a trip to Las Vegas for the ICSC ReCon conference and a scholarship award of $5,000 per student. Ben Heller, Indiana University "This was an experience that no classroom can provide. It made an invaluable contribution to my professional and personal development, as well as to my understanding of the real estate market. It took me beyond cap rates and discounted cash flows, and right into the heart of what makes this industry so exciting. I was fortunate enough to spend time with my Super Mentor, Al Klairmont, and I plan to learn from great leaders like him and apply it to all aspects of my life." Nicole Patel, Marquette University "I will enter the professional world a step ahead. From the super mentors to the events, I was able to expand my network as well as my knowledge of commercial real estate. My Super Mentor, Norris Eber, was always a phone call away when I needed guidance, which is something that will forever be irreplaceable. My time at ICSC ReCon was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had. From the mentor meetings to the scavenger hunt, I was able to fully submerge myself into the educational and networking opportunities." Joseph Stempel, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign "The program gave me an excellent opportunity to learn about the real estate industry and make meaningful connections. My Super Mentor, Peter Borzak, always made time to talk, and the energy and focus he possessed was contagious. My mentorship days were great experiences - from touring an office building with Al Klairmont to watching Bill Barry answer 300 calls in a day, I got a sense of how extremely successful people work day to day."
